Numerologists are publicity shy, and with good reason. One of the most famous numerologists to appear in public was Cagliostro of the late 18 century in France. It is claimed he cured 1000's at Strassboug and undoubtedly won heavily on the gaming tables in Paris. However the Catholic Church via the inquisition persecuted him. He died in the Bastille with his death sentence commuted to life imprisonment.
In modern day France the pioneering work of Michel Gauquelin of the Sorbonne in neo astrology has simply resulted in a raging controversy between academic factions and religious groups. In the case of the bible codes a veritable industry has sprung up in software and publishing. This in spite of rigorous academic papers published in the Journal of Statistical Science.
Outstanding numerologists still live in the U.S and Europe but are generally very private people. Most work for a small group of private clients advising on personal matters but in New York, Geneva and Hong Kong some work in finance.
Our group had it origins in the Theosophical Society in Wellington New Zealand. It began with discreet meetings in sometimes-exotic places. This lead to specialist books changing hands in obscure bookshops. Even more sensitive material changed hands between us and a rural based, New Zealand born numerologist, now somewhere in the USA.
From these tentative beginnings the first version of Merlin, our core program, was born, on a Commodore 386, on a wet Saturday afternoon in a rumpus room in Stokes Valley. This program was written in Lisp, an old interpreted A.I. language. This program proved effective on the international equity market with its first pick in the form of British Biotech, an anti cancer play in 1995.
A string of successes, and some failures followed, until the Asia crisis of 1998. The ensuing event, where Hong Kong was effectively propped up, is too sensitive for a website. However some bankers blew their brains out and record rooms in Paris were torched.
Years later, when the dust had settled, and our little group was safely back in obscurity, a second version of Merlin was begun. It now had sister programs Morganna and Avalon and we are much the wiser for our foray into the world of international banking.
For all the numbers and the moments there are real people doing worthwhile things behind the companies we discover. We hope to be a part of their work and in doing so bring more harmony into the world.
